How is Sony's PlayStation 5 SSD helping games?
With Epic Games showing off “Lumen in the Land of Nanite” Unreal Engine 5 demo a few days ago, we got to see the graphical and performance capabilities of the advancements made, running LIVE on the PlayStation 5 in raw, with no developer input needed (in real-time).
The Entire Demo was down running live, with no loading zones, showcasing a full run-through from start to finish to boasting the new graphical capabilities of the new engine and the PS5. But what give the PS5 so much power to e able to run a demo like this?
Well… The New SSD is more than an SSD.
Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney explained that it is the system storage advancements of the PlayStation 5, Sony hardware architect Mark Cerny had revealed earlier this year, that make the next-gen Sony console a powerhouse.
In a Statement given to IGN via interview, Tim SweeneyStated “I think, first of all, Sony has a massive, massive increase in graphicsperformance compared to previous generations. But you know, I guess we get thatevery generation?” he joked.
“But Sony’s made another breakthrough that in manyways is more fundamental, which is a multi-order magnitude increase in storagebandwidth and reduction in storage latency.”
Sweeney goes on to state the “the PS5 puts a vast amount of flash memory very, very close to the processor. So much that it really fundamentally changed the trade-offs that games can make and stream in.”
More of Sony’s True SSD power will be explained in some moredepth in follow on post, explaining rumours behind the UE5 demo, and thepossibilities that surround the information, and more, Thought we would takeany information given here with a pinch of salt, as though it is rumoured, Sonyhas yet to confirm any information regarding specifications with the consoleand you should await their announcements for full and accurate details.
