PlayStation 5 Graphics are UNREAL, on Engine 5, Epic Games Latest Iteration for Next Gen Consoles.

Epic Games revealed the new state of the art, real time graphics 2 days ago 14th May 2020. The 'Lumen in the Land of Nanite' demo was shown running on the PlayStation 5, showing a close-up statue of made up of 33 Million triangles, in just one scene, with full resolution 8K textures. With no developer input required it displayed at maximum fidelity within the scene showing off its more than impressive and realistic textures, lighting and environmental effects, and this is only in one single frame. The shear power and capabilities in UE5 allow this to be replicated per frame, making each and every frame made up of hundreds of millions of triangles. What Epic want to achieve is "photorealism on par with movie CG and real life."

Unreal engine 5 renders on a triangle-per-pixel basis, with the user only seeing what they need to see. It sounds too simple, but it's the accumulation of over three years' worth of R&D, headed up by Epic Games' technical director of graphics, Brian Karis. UE5 on next gen consoles, at least, is the realisation of of micro-polygon engine, but despite being demonstrated in all its glory on the PlayStation 5 hardware, UE5 is a cross platform endeavour, just like UE4 and earlier.

Epic Games have said they are keen to stress a strong commitment to the interoperability if its new technology across multiple systems, despite showcasing its capabilities on the PlayStation 5, which possibly could have been boosted by Sony’s New SSD hardware which is “faster than any similar device on the market” and according to Sweeney, “The storage architecture on the PS5 is far ahead of anything you can buy on PC for any amount of money right now. It’s going to help drive future PCs"

In simple terms, what we thought were next gen graphics with the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, now can’t compare to the quality of graphical and processing power the true Next-Gen consoles, and given that Sony marketed 4k with the Ps4 Pro, but failed to live up to native 4k, producing only upscaled 4k, it should be a treat to see if the PS5 will support native 4K and 8K, and from the astonishing graphical performance demonstrated here, I believe its safe to say, Sony don’t disappoint. Hopefully Cross platform play will still be accessible, hoping Sony Doesn’t block it like the past few years.

Only time will tell, what Sony and the PS5 are truly capable of, and how much more advanced the PlayStation5’s SSD will be than that of Current PC’s or Computer SSD’s currently on the Market.
